High though the prices of oil now are, have we considered the possible consequences of getting them lowered? Two quotes from Food Prices Are Getting Hotter - 16/11/2007:
Did you see the Tesco (LSE: TSCO) stampede story in the papers this week?
Apparently the Shanghai branch of Britain's favourite grocer announced two weeks ago that it would sell 3,000 bottles of cooking oil at half price. Huge queues formed outside the store and when the doors opened, there was a stampede. Nineteen people, mostly housewives, needed hospital treatment.

and

Tragically, after Carrefour in Chongqing offered a 20% discount on rapeseed oil last weekend, in the rush to buy three people were trampled to death. :D

They don't seem that keen in supplying veg oil cheap here. I've been round several supermarkets and they seem to be fixing the prices. £2.21/3L or 68p for 1L bottles seems to be the norm across most even the budget ones.
