Hi all,

Thinking of returning to the UK after a decade in Africa - wondering whether to bring my (originally UK) 2012 Defender 110 back with me - the challenge is that it's not quite as it was when it left - ICARUS roof / 2 seats / Nimbus Oleo Pneumatic suspension / full overland conversion etc - it has a LOT of mods - and I'm seeing horror stories of insurance mayhem... Who can I contact to give me ideas on how much this would cost me per year ?? Ideally, without having to phone at £11 a minute from here as well :)

Thoughts?

Thank you in advance

Chris

(The other contender to come back is the 1984 soft top Defender 90 with a 4L V8 that I shared the build on here back in the day - But it's a bit colder in Yorkshire than Nairobi ;-)

IMHO Your best bet will be to use an average UK address and get quotes, suspect the likes of Adrian Flux, Heritage etc would be good starters. The 84 wouldn't be too bad I dont think and is now 40 year heritage but I can see you paying for the 2012 a fair bit..... BUT not as much as a new one by far. I dont think most mods matter tbh as long as its not a ridiculous safety risk.

Yeah as above the 90 should be easier and cheaper to insure, assuming it's not overly modified (within reason for a 40+ year old vehicle)... My 1988 110 costs just under £300 on a classic policy :D Half the price of my Audi!

a few wouldn't quote online, hence checking - I think it's the list of add-ons - so need a conversation, I guess....

How long have they lived there? Both RHD?

I would bring them both back cos they probably have very little rot and you will want another if you come home without them.

I don’t think the extras should give to many problems.
Do it online to check cheaper than phone, many also have online chat.

Worse comes to worse if they are both RHD rot free you could do well on a sale price.

If you can figure out a cheap way of calling, some of the brokers may be able to help providing you have a UK address to give them and give them the exact model of the vehicle and specific modifications. Some people seem to dislike them but I'd definitely give Adrian flux a try! I went through them this year, and have used them before on other cars

Both RHD - one is a UK car (the 110), the other is a bit more Kenyan (made up of a few bits)

Ironically they're the only one willing to email me to chat through rather than pay £11 a minute to call - thanks
