I know this has probably been gone over a thousand times on this forum and the regulars are probably bored of it, but I can't find anything quite relating to what I want tyres to be.

My series 2A SWB is going to be used for....general messing about in mud and pay and play things if I get round to that...some day to day use...but the other is my trip next year. There will be a lot of road miles and a lot of sand and rocky miles.

When I went to the desert before (Kazak and Mongolia) I used Colway MT... I was told that this was a bad choice but a whole new set came up cheap. They were brilliant...road noise wasn't that bad, only got stuck once in the mud and that was only because I was being an idiot....and in the desert they were superb...enough grip but not too much to dig in too much...superb at drifting too! in 8500 tough miles only had one puncture and that was because we hit a hidden 12" concrete kurb.

But that was in a Suzuki SJ - a lot lighter than the Landie (and it will be carrying a fair amount of weight). And the Sahara has thicker sand. So I am thinking...is it wise to go for a wider tyre to spread weight...and if so what tyres wil fit on a Series Landie without cutting arches etc...or standard width ones to cut through it? MT type tyre or less aggressive AT? Or is there a desert tyre - but if so would they be completely naff in anything other than sand? In the SJ we also went for a high profile tyre - 100 wall I think...which deffo gave us a height advantage over rocks, craters etc.

Sorry for the long post but thought there might be a few people with suggestions.

hello from the USA. How bout some Super Swamper Radials. They fit the bill for almost everything from snow to mud....sand not so sure anything is right for that. see my pic below. just a thought. i ride super swamper LT 265 r 70/ 16. no issues. And quiet on the road. suprisingly quiet!!! be sure you have your steering stops in place though to avoid rubbing. good luck. tom

not sure how to answer that. the pattern is an agressive rattlesnake pattern but surprisingly quiet for the type of tire it is. 265's go right on. i was rubbing when fully flexed, but thats because i am riding on parabolic springs!
i had the steering stops re-fitted and that stopped the lateral rubbin as well.

Hi :)

Didn't think 265 would fit! What sort of tread pattern are the Swampers then?

Me neither  Normally on a series you have to cut the front wings below the headlamps on a s3, And you have to have Mach 5 or ZU rims or unless your using Spacers?. My Landrover 2a is sat on 235-85-r16 Pirelli Scorpions on Disco 16x7 rims and on rull lock its about an Inch away from the spring hangar on the front   .. I know a lad who has 265 Grizzly claws on his S3 but they are on Mach 5 rims which dont come cheep! And he has had to alter the wings and fit Eyebrows as the tyres hang out the wings by about 3 inches  But if you are determined you can fit 265's although the biggest you can really get on are 235s without mod's.

take a look at the photo i posted. my series 3 is sitting on 265's mounted on discovery spare rims. nothing was cut....nothing was fabricated in a garage. took my 235's off and mounted the 265's...

Hmm, conflicting opinions r.e the width! Thanks for the info colonel.

Aren't KUMHO KL71s mud-pluggers? Or are they good on road and other stuff too?

So do people remove the steering stops to give a better turring circle? Or is it the usual fall-off-but-its-seems-alright-so-dont-replace-it type scenario?
