Two Week Holiday With The Disco

Just got back from a two week jolly with the caravan . North Lakes . Disco behaved SPOT on as usual . Only problem was on the outward bound journey , about an hour in the VISCOUS fan came off  . Did'nt cause any damage really , just a few fin's on the fan and the serpentine belt was slightly chaffed  .

Filled her to the brim before setting off , have done 445 miles now and she's just showing the low fuel light . My caravan weigh's 1500kg's plus all the luggage and 2 kids + 1 wifey . So I recon the Disco was pulling close to 2000kgs . Not bad for a 300 Tdi (only mod is no EGR ) .

This is the second time I've used Supermarket Diesel on a long haul and I do have to admit I normally have at least 1/4 of a tank when I get back . So it does pay to use Shell/BP diesel me thinks ...........

These old school diesels are great , they maybe like tractor engines but its keeps on going and going . The ammount of horror stories I get told from people with NEW stuff is scarey . New injectors + pumps at 60k and still not running right ( mondeo tdci ) , Turbo blown at 26K (vectra 1.9 td) , Diesel Particulate Filters , injectors , turbo and bottom end rebuild on a 8 month old Pugeot !!! Crazy time's .........

It maybe as quick as a glacier and drinks like George Best but I'll keep mine for a few more years yet ;)

I'd recommend running it on veggie oil. Can get it for less than £1 a litre (in 20 litre bottles) in Makro.

Shell / BP fuel may be better quality than the likes of the supermarkets but keep in mind that if it wasn't for supermarkets, people would be paying more for petrol/diesel because it's the supermarkets who contribute to keeping profit margins to a minimum. (as it's not their primary business and it is mainly intended to attract consumers to their stores)

Well on vegetable oil, you'd be saving around £30 per tank of fuel. Not to mention that you'd also be cutting your emissions and increasing the longevity of your engine. £0.37 doesn't sound like much but it soon adds up, especially when you drive a car weighing over 2 tonnes.

I don't know what you mean about all the associated headaches. Most people don't have headaches even when running it on 100% veggie oil during the summer. Unfortunately for me, I'm not "most people" as my car is a little hesitant in the mornings but I'm pretty sure my glow plugs need changing.

Well bugger me , I was told that Veg oil gummed up filters and injectors and has to mixed at least 50/50 ?? Causes poor starting etc ..........

May just give it a go now . Our Peg drives the Disco for work normally so we dont do mega miles during the week , however next long haul I'll try the veggy option ;)
