I have just tried to start my series 3 I haven’t used it in about 3 weeks, as it turned over the battery slowly went flat then I started to get smoke from the engine bay so I removed the key but it carried on turning over, any idea what’s wrong, its a 2.25 diesel if it makes any differance
 
It sounds like the starter solenoid has stuck engaged or since you were cranking the engine for a long time the wiring has overheated and the signal wire to the starter has picked up a live feed, the later is probably the one since there was smoke.
It’s probably melted into the main battery live to the starter motor.
Disconnect the battery and sort it out or you could have a fire or a constantly running starter motor.:eek:
