In my 200 Tdi engine project's turbo, the radial play in the compressor
shaft is roughly 10 thou. Is this normal, and absorbed by temperature
changes/oil pressure, or does it need new bearings ?

Thanks.

Still like new then
the shaft runs on a bed of oil in this gap
to change the bushes is not feasible as you have to split the turbine
and the compressor then rebuild and balance it bearing in mind they
can spin in excess of 100,000 rpm so any imbalance will show itself
dramatically

It's big, it's mean it's really, really green

Thanks for that Andy,

I can get the bearings and seals repaired by AR Turbo systems in
Bradford for 125 quid, which I suppose must include rebalancing the
wheels.

10 thou play is usual ? Wow.

I have a nasty feeling the seals are goosed though because there was a
small pool of oil inside the compressor body when we removed all the hoses.

The seals aren't a positive seal, they're just like a piston ring and
leak a bit. Try it first and see what happens - it sounds like it could
be fine.

Is that the lot on Killinghall road?

Seen it before on my old R5 gt turbo, nowt wrong with it as i had it checked by a local turbo
specialists.

Hmm. Thanks for that too. The engine had 190,000 on it and the middle
two pistons had failed, with scoring from bits released from the top
edge of the pistons on the front walls of both pots.

My working thesis was that the engine had at some point runaway, from
the oil drawn in from the bearings, but I don't know what the working
tolerances are supposed to be.

I think so.

Sounds like I am worrying un-necessarily.
