Turbo Oil Drain Pipe Leak

This wretched leak has cropped up again! Thought id solved it but guess not!

It wasnt too bad before just a small leak so I though ill change the gasket, what a mistake that was. Made the leak 10x worse...

Changed the gasket again, still leaking quite badly.

Cleaned the drain pipe face up, another gasket. STILL leaking!

I can only assume the drain pipe is warped but how do you get it off? I found the 24mm banjo fitting into the sump but no matter what I try I cant get the spanner to sit properly without risk of rounding it. Any suggestions here?

Secondly is it wise to use some liquid gasket? If so should I just use sealant or gasket + sealant.

If it makes any odds ive a TD5inside/CRTurbos hybrid turbo fitted.

have u got a pic plse,

don't know how daft this sounds, have u got an old 24mm ring spanner, cut a slot into it so u can get it over the pipe and onto the banjo fitting , unless i'm misunderstanding it , lol

or maybe a crows foot spanner with an extension bar ??

+1 on the crow's foot, and yes they warp. Check out the daylight ...

blimey , see what u mean , no wonder they leak

assume there's no possibility of putting it into a vice, heating it up and trying to get the face flat , or is there a problem with it splitting the aluminium

imagine ur forced to buy another one
 
Yeah, for now im keeping oil in the boot haha

Ill get some crows feet (24mm!!) Next week and get cracking. Ill try n find a machining place, get it 100% flat, may see if I can get a hose barb braised on so I can tap in the Provent!

As for new ones looks like Britpart (ew no) are £75!!

are u able to put 2-3 gaskets on there as a temp measure to take out any unevenness , with some longer bolts

see what u mean ref getting it machined, ideal if they could cut the distorted plate off and weld a new one on,

doesn't surprise me of the cost

hope the crows foot makes life easier, think i will also get some, got to take out my front air struts at some stage and they look fun to remove the 3 x nuts hidden away

May see if I can get a stainless steel one, avoid any future warping, unlikely I know but still

Was speaking to a mate this morning who had a similar issue with his turbo'd MX5, he pulled the drain off and spent a couple hours sanding it flat using wet & dry on a tile! So it was 100% flat didnt have a problem after that. Think I'll give that a go before I buy anything.

Got the crows feet £22 Nielsen ones from 8mm - 24mm reduced from £50 so good buy!

Wet and dry on a piece of modern glass will work too - something like a mirror is fine anorl. I say modern glass meaning float glass - Victorian glass left something to be desired in the flatness department :rolleyes::D

Good luck - it'll be tedious, but it will work :)

Sanded down on a tile with wet and dry, got it as flat as I could, using a stanley blade as a marker. Refitted with a reinforced paper gasket, short drive at high boost and still leaks!! Though now I know the leak is from the inner bolt that holds the drain in.

Ill see how it fairs over night and how bad the leak is

glad to see the crows foot worked

would a cork gasket help , also ref the bolt ive cut out some gasket paper, washer then the bolt , had a leak on the transfer box on my old series , was just one bolt that oil dripped out of, so used the gasket and washer and actually worked , lol

hope u get it resolved , is annoying when u get small things like this
 
Indeed! I nipped up the bolt while the turbo was still hot, cleaned everything up and left over night, leak is barely noticeable now so not too concerned. Got a fairly long drive tomorrow so I'll see how it fairs after a good run.

Just glad to know how easy that is to remove now, so when I eventually get round the plumbing the Provent oil drain in it shouldn't take long.

great stuff , have used those crow spanners before and have got me out of trouble, reminds me i must buy a new set as i made the big mistake ages ago of lending them to my neighbour who moved and never gave them back

will need another set when i attempt to replace my front struts , as that's going to be a biatch

been pondering about if i should attempt to replace my rear upper wishbones arms , could save myself around £4-500 if i can

hope all goes well and enjoy the trip
