Hi,

So i bought a warn winch and tubular winch bumper from ebay a while ago. ive just got back from work so decided i would clean it up and fit it. only it needs more cleaning than i thought, just wondered what you guys thought really as regards to getting it sand blasted? i dont know much about sand blasting and powder coating etc etc. i think i will have to go down that route as i cant get the wire brush drill bit thing in all the places needed! i was going to hammerite it.

pictures below. i guess i want to know if 1) can it be saved? 2) if its worth saving compared to buying a new one?

thanks

Matt

I think if that were mine I'd wire brush as best as I could and hammerite it.

It seems that the bulk of the rust is in places you cant see anyway, and places that trap water. Also that is a good 5mm piece of steel, so I dont think you should worry that it'll rust through the metal. You may in time set a little bit of bubbling the paint, but chances are you'll get that anyway, as its bound to get the occasional scratches/chips which will cause bubling anyway.

You could get it sand blasted and powder coated of course, but that seems like a very expensive option.

How important is it that its looks pristine and how long do you think it will stay pristine?

You can get different size and shape wire brush drill bits BTW, and a flexible shaft for your drill. If you have a compressor, machine mart sell a sand blasting gun and grit.

thanks fellas,

Im not fussed if it looks great, i wouldnt mind making it look ok/good though. i just thought while i was there i should do it properly and make it last as long as possible. i know eventually it will rust. i think ill look up galvanising in birmingham and see what i can find. it took me about 3 hours to do the one side yesterday so i kinda want to do the rest now.

thanks again for the replies.

Matt
