Hi Guys, help requested!

Driving at 60mph+ yesterday my Disco II (04 plate) felt like I had briefly touched the brakes (I hadn't!) followed by a smell of burning oil. There was then a horrible high pitch geary whine that matched road speed (hardly hear it in 1st and 2nd, very noisy on deceleration. I have to admit I had somewhat neglected to check the oil in gearbox's for a while so I am now being punished...! Needless to say I topped up oil levels immediately and transfer box was empty. The oil has reduced the noise but there is still a whine and it now makes a clunk when taking off in 1st.

Have I done permanent damage, can it be fixed? Have I damaged the gears or will it be bearings?

I reckon I could deal with taking the gearbox out but recon-ing a transfer box looks beyond me.
