Hi All,

Got a problem with my Defender 90 300tdi 1996.

I've got an intermittent clunking noise and also a continuous rattle/vibration from what i believe is the front output shaft or bearing of the transfer box in 3rd, 4th, 5th gear in excess of 35mph.

Firstly i thought it may be the front prop shaft so i've dropped that out and have driven round the block with RWD only and the noise is still there.

Do you think im right in saying its the T/Box?

If so What T/Box's can i fit or what are my other options??

Thanks In Advance

Have you checked the rear prop and UJ's? and Handbrake drum ...

Hi Paul
have had a good old tug on the rear prop and there is no play at all.

Didn't notice anything untoward with the handbrake drum either but i didnt physically have a tug on that

OK, just trying to make it simpler .. ;)

I'd get under and have a look at the output flange, see if it wobbles, if so the nut might simply be loose, but more likely it's the seal and bearing. If it feels good and smooth then I've never gone further into a transfer box so can't help more, sorry.

Many Thanks Paul!

Its getting dark now so ill crawl under again tomorrow and have a feel of her output shaft nut.

And go from there!

Thanks for the super fast response!

Also worth trying the front diff input flange .. when my rear diff went it made similar noises, but they sounded like they were from the front!

Thanks Paul,

Front Diff all seems fine i thought it was the diff in the first place so had a good tug and look around.

Will wait until tomorrow and have a look at the T/Box bearing.
