Ok, have read a lot about the benefits of changing to a 1.2 transfer box.

How much can I expect to pay?

How easy is the change?

Thanks, it doesn't look too hard. Now I just need to find a 1.222 at the right money......

just be aware that with a 1.2 behind a 200tdi in a 110 you wont want to be towing , and 4th gear will get more use on hills :)

I've got a 1.2 in my 110 200tdi and even with 265/75 tyres it pulls fine. Surely it's no different to a disco? You see discos pulling trailers all the time.

Discoverys have considerably smaller diameter tyres (usually) ;)

Yes you're correct that does make a difference. I wouldn't want to go any bigger than what I have with the 1.22 transfer box. It did take me a few miles to get used to the gearing as I went to the 1.22 from a 1.66 transfer box and I do have to drop down more than I used to but its fine. I've not pulled any serious weight with it yet but I have had some moderate weight in the back and it seemed fine.

bluehaze - If there's nothing wrong with your 1.4 then don't bother changing to the 1.2. I made the move as a 200tdi mated to a 1.66 box revs too high for the motorway journeys that I make. As I was going through the expense of changing it (new from ashcroft) I took the plunge and went 1.2. My last defender was 1.4 so I know what that feels like. If you drive your county fully laden all the time then stick with the 1.4. If you drive it lightly loaded and you have some money to spare then why not go for the 1.2.

I have a 90 thats a 300tdi with an auto and 1.2 , its a tad to high geared as it does not lock up untill you are doing about 53mph (true not speedo) and when towing a tandem with a freelander on it doesnt take much to unlock , it is good for solo motorway use as you are doing about 68 at 2500 !!:D

One of the best's mods I ever did :) True to say that fully loaded used to be a pain on long motorway hills but I cured this with a Turbo/injection pump tweak.

Somtimes have to use low box when pulling away from tricky junctions when towing a 3.5t trailer but the advantages far out weigh the dis-advantages.
