Took my newly rebuilt defender to the show this weekend, and straight away found another problem to fix!

When on the motorway, if gently lifted off the gas, ie box in overrun, there's a loud nasty wearing/bearing/vibrating noise coming from gbox/tbox...

I thinking its a bearing in the tbox myself, also there is about 1/2 a rotation of play on the front prop! hence quite a lot of 'slapping'!! though noting on the rear prop?

anyway, im gonna have a do at it myself but just wondered ... how to correct the play in front prop? and which bearing(s) to replace?

Have you lifted it by any chance? I lifted mine then had this problem and its not the TBox - its the front prop - don't worry about it too much - try a thourough greasin first!

I had this noise. Feel the propshafts at the Tbox end, you may be unplesantly supprised by how much play you can get from the Tbox outputs. Also check your UJs, mine did this, it was caused by a dead UJ at the front, and a bent propshaft at the back; shook the Transfer box to bits.

New rear prop, UJ and transfer box later; back in buisness.

hmmm dont worry too much! famous last words eh!

Right, did a little experiment this weekend, borrowed my mates wide angle front prop, banged it on and went for a spin. Exactly the same. Well p***ed off.

Could it be knackered bearings in the transfer box? It only makes the noise when travelling at speed (50+) and slowly lifting off the throttle.
