i think ive traced the nasty clunk i,m getting whilst slowing down braking, whilst driving i shift the gear box into neutral slow down to about the speed when the clunk happens and theres nothing there.does this point the finger to the transfer box?i,ve also tried driving in diff lock with either prop out and the problems still there.ive had all wheels in the air and all seems fine, all props ok,all bushes(a-frame)ok.and when clunk happens its felt through the gear change lever.any thoughts on what can go wrong with these boxes much appreciated.am i looking at a very expensive repair?

Could well be main spline wear then....given you appear to have checked everything else.

Look at the back of the transfer box about 11 o'clock from hand brake drum and remove the 6 bolts in a ring that hold on an 'inspection' cover. You will be able to see the back of a gear with a splined shaft in the middle.

Chock wheel, diff lock in, hand brake off and rotate rear prop a little. You should be able to see if the gear wheel moves before the centre shaft moves. If so then you have the spline wear.

thanx for replies lads.i,m pulling my hair out on this one.the transfer box oil was changed last month, gearbox oil has,nt been changed but levels ok and colours ok(would old oil cause such a clunk)axle oils ok,if it was to be this worn spline how big a job is it for the fairly handy home mechanic.and do i have to drain transfer box before removing this inspection cover
