I once re-manufactured a transmission for a guy who had been driving round with his Range Rover transmission in failsafe mode (i.e. stuck in 4th gear) for 9 months !
If any parts inside the inhibitor switch are broken then you can’t get replacements. However, as a new switch costs £600 from Land Rover and second-hand ones sold on eBay frequently fetch £150, it may be worthwhile taking the risk and stripping your switch, in case it’s simply a case of cleaning the contacts to fix it. You’d then have to find a suitable method for securing the two halves of the switch back together again to keep it watertight.
Clearly, it’s easiest to inspect the connector plug first to check for a faulty connection before you go to the effort of pulling the switch apart. If you plug in a diagnostic machine that is capable of reading Land Rover transmission fault codes, then a P0705 error will confirm that the fault lies with the inhibitor switch.
The switch can also be tested for continuity at the connector plug with a multimeter :
(Gear positions 4, 3 & 2 don’t apply to the Range Rover)
The BMW switches are much cheaper to buy, but you’d have to extend the wires between the (identical) switch and connector.

I believe so I had to quote my reg to get the correct one. It's the same size as the old one with the same capacity.

The reg bit doesn't always work. I was given the wrong batteries for 3yrs , despite them having my veh reg. However, if it is the same physical size and same capacity, all is good

Yh I never wholeheartedly trust the reg check thing. But I know it was a big heavy thing, thought about using a block and tackle to get it inThe reg bit doesn't always work. Think there's a guy on Fleabay that rebuilds the XYZ switch for about £60.Worth doing it yourself as my local independent RR guy charged me a tad under £600 to replace mine with a pattern part.

Have read the codes today and I got Gear Switch Fault, no number, after clearing it car now starting in Park. I think it's only a matter of time that the fault will return so will look into a switch rebuild or replacement. Thanks for the help with this problem it is greatly appreciated.

I home water, funny how you can drink 10 pints of beer and never need to go until after the first time then you caannot stop. Been drinking of loads water since the doc's told me to cut down on my alcohol,living in the loo.

You and I must have the same Dr as that's exactly what he said to, cut the beer drink water. Now on the alcohol free beers surprisingly good especially with a top up of Whisky.tomcat59alan

Need alcohol free whisky. This sobriety is overrated I gave the alcohol councilor a tongue lashingover the government's unit limits.I asked him for the medical research they're based on he couldn't tell me because there is non. Someone plucked the numbers out of the air.he asked if I smoked, which I dont so I asked him the gov recommendation on the number of piesone can eat. That shut the fat bugger up.

They always blame problems on drinking & smoking went to see Doc about pain in my knee those were the first questions asked !!! The gov limits are ridiculous, thought they'd encourage drinking & smoking with the amount of tax raised.BTW I love a good pie
