reet mr sighontits, fer those that int gort it yet can yer explain why me old escort could go faster in 4th than it could in 5th? am having trouble getting anthony to grasp it so if i use some big tecnickle wurds it might help

Right ...... in 5th gear the problem was that the REVS were too LOW, and ther injun wan't making enuff POWER or torque to PULL against the drag of the road and the wind.

When you dropped a cog, the effect was (a) to get the injun REVS UP so it was revving up nearer the max power band AND (b) using a LOWER gear also multiplies the torque more, so you got a double whammy boost.

I used to like driving trucks with the range-change Eaton 15 speed gearbox, 'cos with that many gears I could keep the injun really on the boil all the time.

I hope Riggas isn't following this thread - he might learn summat and that would never do.

fooking copycat ya only knew that cos ov what I saided olreddy

Aye, my old Austin Menstrual were like that. Really great cruisin in 5th, but couldn't get much past 110, could do nearly 120 redlining in 4th though ;)

its a fooking weird feeling, yer accelerating up the box , yer in 4th doing 90 million hundred RPMs and you change up to 5th , and yer fooking car slows down. fooking gutless piece of ford poop.

any way i'll help anthony read this fred and see if it will ignite that spark

Getting back to the original post :)
Its horses for courses.
My D2 V8 does 0-62mph in 12.5 seconds, not super quick but also not something that a TDi or TD5 would achieve. I tow an 8ft x 5ft trailer with about a ton on it regularly, and I have to be careful because I forget it's there.

Then there is the vehicles we have to overtake here. (see http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/4x4-86x86-41849.html ) and I am sure I wouldn't be too keen trying to overtake one of those 180 ft monsters in a diesel. I would have to write the guy a letter the week before to tell him I was going to overtake.

The trade off is of course the 18-19 mpg I get on a trip and heaven forbid what I get around town! She is a thirsty beast.

My 3.8 V6 Commodore(Opal?) beats this engine hands down in power, acceleration, but is half the weight, but then gets 30 mpg on its ear!.

Like I said..horses for courses. I am sure there are other threads that debate the V8 v Tdi question, just do a search for it.
Cheers mate! :)
