For a while now I have wanted to do some of the legendary trails in the USA in my own Land Rover. Travel from east to west taking on some of the toughest tracks there is. However there is one thing I need to know and can't seem to find anything about and here is really the only place I could think of to ask.

That being, can I take my D90 to the USA on a temporary basis without it facing the problems that other Defenders face when being imported into the USA? I know you cannot register a Defender in the USA unless it meets strict classic vehicle specifications - however can it be done whilst still being registered as a British vehicle? This would be my first expedition and if it does go ahead, it will be in the year 2017 or 2018 or at a great push maybe 2019 but I would hope the earlier of those dates. I am trying to find out this information now because as I am sure the more experienced of you appreciate, this will require a lot of planning and vehicle preparation. My D90 is going to need 33 or 35" tyres, locking diffs and a hell of a suspension system for this trip. I suspect the trip will be 50/50 between camping and motels etc.

If it is at all possible, what is the best way to get the 90 into the country? Quickest and safest? Cost is a factor but not a major one. With the vehicles wellbeing in transit being a priority - this is no place to skimp.

I have a fair few destinations I especially want to visit already - it's just a matter of getting the 'Fender there.

Hope you guys can help, cheers.
