The guides don't wear much upper or lower it's the tensioners that will tend to wear. I changed my chains at 108,000 miles, no wear on any of the guides. Put them back in. Just fitted tensioners to be on safe side.

Hi,
I,m trying to buy the most needed parts to do the timing chains. In a different thread you advised me to change the t/chains as they seem stretched too far. Chains ordered already.
This tensioner thingy, how many there? Only one I guess.
Removing the front cover without head, will not it damage the head gasket?

Not if you are careful removing it then use Hylomar to reseal it. Check what you need after strip down then buy only what you require.

I,m not familiar with ,hylomar,. There are so many varities on ebay. Which one to use?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hylomar-b...670754?hash=item3cf4e4c3a2:g:KtUAAOSwk5FUw2~r You apply to both surfaces. Clean surfaces of course. Then bring together, finger tighten. Wait a few minutes for the solvent to evaporate then tighten down. Made originally for surface to surface joints, without gaskets, on Rolls Royce jet engines. The best joining compound on the planet.

How long does it stay good for in your toolbox? I really ought to have a tube in there for emergencies!
