Not a question or anything particularly interesting, but I thought I would share something from most of a day under the car.
For a long time now I have had a ticking sound very similar to a slightly noisy tappet/cam follower sound while the engine is running. Seems to be coming from the passenger side bank and increases/decreases with revs.
I checked as best as possible to see if it was an exhaust leak and fearing all the time a head gasket failure. However I kept my hopes up as I have not suffered overheating and there is no mayo in the oil cap.
So clutching at straws and deciding it was the exhaust (as that is cheaper) I put manifold gaskets on my shopping list.
Along with the ticking I have had an intermittant rattle, which I have always hunted for and could not find. It was unrelated to the ticking. I suspected the cats (or one at least). However, today whilst fitting the new heat shields for some reason I grabbed the rubber hanger in front of the middle silencer and I noticed the exact rattle. So from there I followed the system about looking for the rattle and something loose.
What I found was the join in the pipes between the manifold down pipe and the cat on the passenger side had a gap that flexed a little when I wriggled the rubber hanger.
Tightening up the 3 nuts about one click on the ratchet seemed to close the gap.
Now the rattle has pretty much gone and so has the ticking too.
Fingers crossed that is it. I suppose there is a good chance it needs a new seal or some fresh exhaust putty on the join.
Cheers
