TD5 turbo advice

As ususal there are plenty noises on my Defender TD5 110 and today I started to look at my turbo as I found that my land was smoking too much. I checked with a screwdriver the play on the turbo shaft and there is defently some play.... How to now how much clearance to have on this turbo shaft .The local land Rover mechanic told that the turbo is ccoked and I have to change it for a new one. i need some advice on this turbo clearance. The second thing I would like to know is if the old turbo can be fixed and where in UK.

You could always throw a rebuild kit at it, assuming its not badly worn on the shaft or something else.

Take it apart, and if its rebuildable throw one of these at it.

Edit, I stumbled across these looking for a gt17 rebuild kit for a smaller turbo in the family I have for another project, so haven't actually rebuilt a gt20.
