Before putting my Td5 bulkhead and dash into my 90 the fuel gauge always read half.. Half full half empty?... Half... Lol

I've put in the td5 dash and it doesn't register at all. I have taken my seat out tonight and firstly I noticed the fuel sender wires were wrong (doesn't surprise me with the previous owner...)

If i short earth to the green/black wire the fuel gauge works it's way up to full. Even if the fuel light actually comes on when it's half way through red all the way to the full line,

So I know the earth cable is working and I know the green/black works and goes to the gauge which also works.. So would I be right in saying that my sender is pooped?

Its certainly sounding that way, do you have a multimeter, and if so you can try measuring the tank sender unit resistance (with the wires disconnected). If you get an open circuit it is dud. As you have TDI's (diesel) there is no chance of blowing yourself up due to sparks with the meter (before the naysayers jump in!!) Not sure what resistance value you are looking for but should be less than about 200 ohms

The sender unit is out as it's gone dark and I do have a multimeter, it seems. Multimeter is needed just as much as an hammer when owning a landy.

I don't know how to check resistance so I'll Google it now and test it.

If its out even better, you should get the highest resistance then the float is fully down in the tank empty position. The resistance should decrease smoothly as you move the float up to the full position where it should be a low resistance. Be wary if you have a digital multimeter as the refresh rate on the display can make it look like the value is jumping around when in reality it isn't. Just stop after a small movement, take a reading then another small movement/reading and you should see a steady decrease in resistance. if you don't get any resistance or it is really high (500 ohm plus) then I would say its fubard.

New sender in, black in the middle, green closest to the front of the truck and white and slate at the back. All works and so does the low fuel light. Because I have a td5 dash in my 1990 90 It should do the fuel light through the dash however it's backwards. My fuel light goes out when the level drops low enough...

Instead of having it go that way I simply used my old low fuel light and cable and attached it to the warning lamp in the truck.
