Hi all my td5 auto is very tempremental at changing gear sometimes it will change ok and then the next time you drive it it wont change until 3k revs on a flat straight road (engine and box warm) have changed the auto box oil and also the filter and it still isn't playing ball any ideas.

silly question's

have you checked the level when idleing and cold.

do you have a leak from the pan gasket you fitted when changed or the oil cooler system? (some times the system wont leak until under pressuer check for an oilt film on the unions and again the oil level)

what state was the old oil? was it a brown red? red? black?

did you use the correct atf oil?

these are the basic checks before we go to indepth.

sorry to patrinise you with this type of stuff but it better to do silly things before you rip things to bits

Hi the correct grade of dextron was put in to the gearbox and was filled while operating the gear selector lever as described in a well known owners service manuel when the filter was changed i also replaced the gasket and have since replaced the oil again both times the oil was a dirty brown colour which i wouldn't say was out of the norm form any other landy I have worked with. There is'nt any sign of a major leak from the box. the slow change is more of an intermittent thing sometimes it works a dream then others it won't. If I put the caravan on and give it a good thrash it will be ok for a day or two then start buggering about again.

:(

well i know this wont help but mine was same and was cured through a gear box oil and filter change. I dodnt relise just how bad mine had got untill it started to hold onto gears too long then also at times took a while to selct a gear. I only had it done last Wednesday and bot what a difference it made it now runs like a dream. I will add the Mechanic at the local independant Land Rover dealer said they cannot get all the oil out and if its still a little funnny then it wmight want doing again very soon to aid more improvement but so far so good.
