Hi all,

Sorry guys i put this in the introduce me thread and i realise i should have put it here! wont happen again

I am new to this sort of thing and am looking for help with a starting problem I have with my 52 plate TD4 Freelander!

I have read threads here that appear to be similar but I'm not sure if mine is.

It doesn't matter if its hot or cold, thats weather or engine, wether the engines been running for 5 mins, 5 hours or first start in the morning, when strarting it just turns over and over and may finally catch if not when i try and turn it over again it may catch straight away or after 5secs, 10secs or what ever, it may not catch again. However at the moment it will eventually start. ( it appears to be getting worse since the weather turned colder.

In other 'Problem Starting' threads it mentioned possibilities like fuel pump, cam sensor. I have changed both of these (at no cost)and fitted a new filter. (pump and filter are above the rear wheel arch) problem still exists.

I have also had instance of the engine managment light coming on when i go round a slow corner in too higher gear, I loose some power and the engine is not getting over 3000revs, until I stop and restart the engine to clear the light then all is ok again. I have connected to a freinds universal test machine and a fault p1190 high fuel pressure plausibility was displayed. No previous faults existed.

I dont know if they are related.

The car has done 60k miles, serviced regularly, on a 52 plate (nov 02)

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.:)

Sorry for the war and peace, but I spose the more info you get the better!

cheers

Hi Dean, a real bummer these starting tricks, I had a similar problem not long back, have you tried the "leak off" flow at the injectors?? there is a thread on this I did before, remove the injector cover, take one of the injector leak-off pipes from the top of the injector say number one injector and block of the fuel return to the tank, now put a tube to the top of number one injector and the other end into a jar/container, switch the ignition on (not start) and see if there is an oil flow from the injector leak off pipe. If there is then you will have to do the same thing to each injector in turn until you find the leaking one. Basically if the low pressure side on the injector value is not closing the fuel system is unable to create high pressure fuel to the common rail fuel supply, this means no start pressure. try it, it costs nowt to try,

Tight nuts.

There is also a second fuel lift pump under the bonnet that is known to fail.

Chaser..

had a similar thing with mine, but it went from starting perfectly to being a non-start in a day. turned out to be a faulty injector causing excessive leak off, which is what clawhammer is saying.

good luck

Cheers guys!

I will try the injector test over the next couple of days.

Will let you know wot happens.

Chaser, you say there is another pump under the bonnet, where abouts is it as i was told my model only had the one under the wheel arch?

Sorry Dean, I should have read your post more carefully, 2 pumps were fitted up to early 02 models when filter and second pump were in engine bay.
Chaser....

Hi guys

have done the injector checks and it appears the no1 injector is leaking, the others are ok. when i say leaking its more like a wet pharrrrrt! if that, not even a dribble (at the mo), excellent advice cheers.

so begs the next question, are they easy to change or do i have to go to the not so local main stealer, once i have taken out a small mortgage?

cheers

Hi clawhammer,

thank you.
