Hi all, I don't post much on here so please bear with me.
I have a Freelander 1 TD4 (2001) with two issues... Firstly, my brake pedal is intermittently and randomly failing. I have rear brakes at the floor but the pedal randomly disappears with no resistance and i lose braking temporarily until I pump the pedal. Any thoughts??

Secondly, When I took the car to a brake and clutch man, he took a look and spotted fluid pouring out over the gearbox (i too witnessed this dreaded drip) and told me it is my slave cylinder. And before you ask, yes the clutch pedal requires going to the floor for a smooth change.

So far, I have checked for leaks... none.
the brake master cylinder is brand new.
The whole brake system has been bled about 10 times pneumatically and manually.

my questions are, are the brake and clutch system fed off the same reservoir and piping?
And is this slave cylinder leak the cause of my brakes failing?
Finally, if yes to the above, am I looking at the "dreaded slave cylinder replacement" as has been around on so many posts before. Any advice is helpful as i thought the slave cylinder was a simple changeover but the more i read the more worried i am getting.

Brake and clutch completely different hydraulic systems.
Don't use car with brakes like that.
Find out where 'fluid over gearbox' is coming from. Could be brake fluid from higher up.

Is brake master cylinder loosing fluid?
I would find the brake problem first, if no fluid loss in brake system then suspect the master cylinder seals as it affects all brakes.

Check thoroughly for leaks on all pipes and hoses, twist hoses to look for cracks. Get pedal pressed hard whilst looking.

Wrt clutch, some TD4 have low pedal, again, once found source of leak then it may tell you if the clutch slave is leaking. The slave is inside the gearbox so the fluid wouldn't be all over it!!

Clutch slave is a gearbox out job, but the master is an easy change and maybe cause, or simply bleeding it.

Suggest you have a good look as above and report back!!
