td4 freelander starting problems

got freelander td4 after getting rid off loved disco v8, sold it with
164,000 miles and it only cost in petrol
starting to fall out with freelander over problems air mask sensor being the
first now camshaft sensor.
mother in-laws freelander two months ago started to have problems starting.
went on l r diagnostics and showed up camshaft sensor. miles at 59,000.
replaced sensor and car is now fine.
two weeks ago my freelander started to show same problems but only got
34,000 miles on clock. is this a very common problem? and at what milage is
it common for the part to fail? how many other people have had this problem?

No problems here on '01 TD4 with 73k miles on clock. Just normal servicing
and parts you would expect to wear out (discs, wipers etc).

Used to have a Td4, regularly failed to start. Just completely dead. Lights
came on dash when I turned on the ignition, but it just would not do
anything more. Usually happened after it had been stopped for a short while.
If I left it for 30mins and then tried again it would always start. LR
dealer could not find a problem, neither could LR Rescue guys.
This was just one of the many, many, many faults with the vehicle I had
which resulted in the dealer buying it back from me and giving me
compensation!

I sincerely hope yours is a better vehicle than mine was.

I had a Vauxhall which was just the same as that, and for 3 years running it
also did the same thing almost immediately after the annual main dealer
service. They changed the ECU thingy 'free of charge' in the end but that
didn't make any difference either ...... it did it again shortly afterwards.

Our TD4 needed a new camshaft sensor at 52.5K. Same symptoms as everyone
else. Cold starts were fine. Warm starts (i.e. vehicle had been stood still
upto 30 mins) not a chance!

Took it to a non-LR garage (to my cost). He diagnosed it (with his non-LR
computer) as a immobiliser fault. Disengaged the ECU and killed the car!!!
Had to be recovered to an LR dealer. Cost me £584 for a £50 part!!! The
non-LR dealer probably cost me nearly £500 of this! Needless to say, all
servicing etc is now done at said dealer! You live and learn.

According to the LR dealer (Stratstone, Middleton-On-The-Wolds, East Yorks),
a failed cam sensor is pretty common.
