Having spent hours and hours looking under my bonnet and at photos on forums trying to solve a smoke and misfire that only happens when cold between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm, I noticed that the pipe on the rh side of the inter cooler has quite a winding route to the inlet manifold. Looking at the BMW m47n engine the EGR is on the rh side rather than the left as it is on the TD4. The manifold looks like it would bolt straight on as a replacement without modification. I believe the MAP sensor is the same but would need rerouting to the lh side. You would also need a two part EGR bypass kit which also blanks the exhaust at the exhaust manifold. I think there is enough room to put the blanking kit on the rh side without fouling on anything, dont take my word for it like with many things i could be wrong. You would then need to shorten the silicon hose (mine is quite flexible rather than a rigid shaped one) or get one that would make the necessary bend. Im not sure if the m47n engine has swirl flaps or how they operate but you can buy blanking caps if it does as i have heard they tend to disintegrate killing the engine. The easier route should increase airflow and increase power. This would leave the original air intake with a spare part as the intake pipe is also connected to the winding inter cooler pipe you would have made useless. This could just be left or neatly trimmed, if the latter it would only have fitting point. The other idea I had is to throw this in the bin and buy a rover 75 intake and modify it buy removing the corrugated bellows as described here DIESEL TUNING the rover has 4bhp more than the freelander and i think this simple modification could increase by at least that as the freelander gets its air from the inner wing and has quite a long way to travel. Its probably a bit cooler and dryer in there but i think (could be wrong again) it should increase power overall and if you want to go wading that deep you would need a snorkel anyway. I think you could easily do these mods for under £100 (if you already have an EGR bypass Kit) especially if you were to ebay the original EGR, Inlet manifold and intake pipe. I am thinking of doing these mods but just wanted some opinions first. Have no idea how much power increase this would get but i think 8-10bhp wouldn't be to unrealistic and am hoping it will cost me no more than £50 once i have resold the bits. Alternatively you might be able to use the bmw intake but i don't know that either.

Most people just go for the Synergy 2a with the EGR bypass (or just remove the vacuum pipe after cleaning out the carbon) and fitting the BMW cyclone mod to the crankcase breather, or just stick with what LR sold us in the first place. There again if you have the time and inclination most things are possible :)
