Hi all,
I bought a Landrover Freelander TD4 in October, its an 06 plate with 68,000 miles full service history. The service record shows that the Fuel Injectors were replaced in September so they should be fine.
About a month after buying it I noticed some diesel knocking around 2000-3000RPM with what felt like small power slips during this rev range but once accelerated through no problems. The sound was like firecrackers under the bonnet and this happens even if you rev it when stationary.
I took it to a garage who couldnt find any fault codes and did a backflow test on the injectors and told me all was fine the only thing they could recommend was to drive it until it broke
Gradually the symptoms became more common and worse until the other day when the car had an episode with loads of knocking and finally a stall. When I restarted the engine management light was on and it was in limp home mode - actually it drove without any knocking and was a pleasure to drive in this mode. Occassionaly the light would go off and it would go back into normal mode but the knocking was back. Then back into engine management light on mode and all good again.
So I took it to the mechanic who ran it through diagnostic software and its showing error codes 512, 514 ,516, 518. They have stated that its related to injector load drop 400 rail pressure sensor. They changed the diesel filter - no effect but the engine management light is now off and it drives as it did before (with the knocking around 2000-3000 RPM). I didnt want to get into the expensive job of benchmarking the injectors as they are meant to be new.
Would really appreciate any advice - could this be the MAF sensor? I dont understand how it could be the injectors if the limp home mode drove fine - the injectors would still be used wouldnt they?
All advice really appreciated and if anyone can recommend a mechanic in the Bucks or Middlesex area gladly received.
Thanks guys
