Talking of springs...

Yer allright, good point. 2-3 hours doesnt seem bad.

Not bought it. But he will let me have it for £900 without MOT. think i may be able to talk him down a little from there to. Shouldnt need much to get it through either. Its a bit saggy so im worried about the springs, apart from that maybe a brake overhaul but that should be it. Might need someone to help me tune the V8 to get it through emissions :D

But i STILL dont know if i should buy it or not!? 2nd car dillema's. I dont need it, but kind of want it. Am i being stupid?

I agree, go for it if you can afford it. I was in the same situation
when thinking of buying my SIII lightweight. I am so pleased I did.
I could afford it (I have been saving up for nearly a decade!) and I
wanted it. I didnt really care what anyone else thought as long
as it was in working order. I then went on to spend a small fortune
on it to get it past its MOT but in the end I have a brilliant daily
drive and I really love it. I am planning to do a bit of off road this
weekend, its first real test. I just hope I dont break anything too
expensive!!
Re the springs, I changed some on a normal SIII with a mate and
the bolts had to be ground off, it therefore took 2 days. We were
also taking our time and enjoying the work so we were not rushed.

Sometimes you just have to take the plunge!!
Let us know how yo get on and show some photos if you give in to
temptation.

I've just done the springs and shocks on my s111, it took 2 days, quite a bit of grinder action and about 3 pints of blood.
Get new u bolts etc and just cut off the old ones, i tried for ages to get the old bolts off, don't know why i bothered in the end cos my new springs came with new u bolts.

just bite the bullet get the spring's, shockes, u bolts and shackles, cut all the old stuff of a corner at a time and just replace it all

chances are the bolts will be fuked if you do get the undone and will need replacing anyway
the shocks are probally soft due to the springs getting week so even if you change the spring it will then bounce to much and have to change them
and the shackles well your changing everything else so would be a shame to leave them

with a big hammer and a good grinder shouldnt take more than a couple of hours

Unless its a rediculous amount of smoke, it wont fail. A 2a is exempt from an emissions test I beleive. (I know mine is!) Also £900 is way over the odds, I have seen V8 lightweights not sell for 500 quid needing only minor welding.

As for springs, assuming you are going for para's I'd suggest Rocky Mountain seeing as I have just had a set of springs/shock/shackles and they are superb.

As for time? If the bolts come off easily then you are looking at 1.5->2 hours an axle otherwise you could make a weekend of it!

The 2A will be exempt from emissions. However it depends how strict your MOT'er is. In theory (from my limited knowledge anyway) they should test it the to emission limits of the vehicle that it came out of.

As Pobby says, buy new U bolts, nuts and so on for the springs - it really isnt worth the time it takes to undo them for the price they cost new - they will probably be rusty anyway - cut the u bolts off. The Biggest problem I have always had with leaf springs is where it bolts through the chassis or sometimes the shackles - the bush in the chassis falls apart so when you turn the bolt you end up turning the whole bush inside the chassis which is quite annoying. I ended up making a bush extraction tool (patent not pending LOL - also works as a chassis straightening tool!) - took an hour or so to come up with the idea and make it but saved many hours of the burning the bush/wacking it with a hammer/crying routine.
