Swivel Ball to axle - torque question

Simple question

How?

I have new swivel ball joint on order and plan fitting this weekend.
Fine so far

I've had a look at the job already and one thing I cannot figure is how do you torque up the bolts that hold the swivel joint to the axle.
Thread lock on them etc. no problem
but no room for socket and T wrench in the space between the two bits. I can get a ring spanner on them OK
Number of options I can think of
1/ Is there a special tool
2/ Is it 4 lb hammer tight
3/ AAAARRRGGGGHHH tight
4/ UUURRRGGGGHHH tight


For some reason I don't think I want these bolts falling out whilst moving.
Any suggestions please :decision:

the swivels don't connect to the axle, do they?

oh an never had a problem when buster helped me do my swivels



still got the drivers side to do over the summer!

No.3 As long as all yer threads are clean and ye use the recommended thread lock ye 'should' be fine. Use a tap to get the crud outta the holes and a die to clean the bolts.. that's the way ah did it anyways and no probs yet

Yes, it's called a rat**** spanner of the right size.. get's the job done in a fraction of the time

stub axle to swivel pin housing 65Nm


is that what you need?


an it wern't a problem to tourqe them up from what i can remember

aye! still not done it

been busy sortin out the clutch probs i've had
oh an it's been too fookin cold


but will get it done in the next few weeks
i brought a spring scale on monday to measure the pull an now the weather is a bit better i don't mind spending a few hours setting it all up properly.

an not sure when we're next up your way, not made any plans, we were spozed to be up last weekend but what with clutch probs daren't risk it

an now afterspending a fortune on the disco it'll probley be autumn before we're up again.




but if i ain't done it by then, do ya fancy supervising while i do it?

I just spanner them up real tight. The bolts are very tough and using loctite and a standard length spanner (and a standard length human), give a good AAAARRRGGGGHHH tight

I do not have a torque spanner but mine were done a couple of years ago 'as above' and my 200tdi is off road every weekend along with the odd competition and no problems to date......................that's done it, me and my big mouth!!

basically clean both threads and do them up as tight as possible with thread lock using a 14 mm spanner


The bolts in question are the seven that hold the swivel housing to the axle (between number 20 and 24 on the picture)

Nether RAVE or Haynes shows any way of getting the right torque on these bolts as the housing gets in the way
RAVE has the torque as
Swivel bearing housing to axle case 73Nm

OK I admit it as a Japanese bike rider, things like this scare me to death as they are so critical on Jap bikes, steel bolts into ali casings etc.

I am learning that Landies are a bit stronger, but thought I had better check to be on the safe side
