Swivel Assembly | Oil Seal Retaining Plate... A Little Confused?

I'm just about to reassemble the n/s swivel assembly on my 90, but can't seem to make sense of one aspect. It's an early 90 with the top Railko bush set-up, plus bottom pin and bearing, as opposed to the later twin bearing type...

Upon disassembly of the swivel assembly, I found that there were TWO oil seal retaining plates fitted back-to-back, with no sign of a gasket - with the oil seal located beneath these and at the joint of the swivel housing casing.

The relevant Haynes Manual refers to a "Retaining plate and gasket" and the dedicated Land Rover Manual an "Oil seal plate and washer" - I'm assuming that in this instance the word washer is used to refer to the gasket, but there's no reference made to, or schematic of, a twin oil seal retaining plate set-up.

Would it be that the PO mistakenly reassembled things this way, or is there something I'm missing? I was uber-methodical with the disassembly process, laying all of the components/parts out in order and can confirm, without doubt, that there were TWO retaining plates fitted.

Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks again, in advance.

Thanks for the reply.

I did a bit more digging (quite a bit, actually) and you're right, early models do have a twin plate set-up, whilst later models don't - this doesn't seem to be covered in either the Haynes, or genuine LR manuals - even the exploded diagrams are easy to misinterpret. So, it's the oil seal, gasket, then two retaining plates to hang off the back of the swivel ball - before bolting it onto the axle.

Onwards and upwards... should finish this tomorrow, then onto the A-Frame, o/s rear wheel bearings, new shock and fuse box upgrade.. all in time for the MOT!
