Backstory
Right guys I've got a customers 2008 FL2 TD4 auto in that was making a strange whining noise from the engine compartment area, I took it for a test drive and immediately noticed that it was the power steering, whine changed a lot when shaking steering and the pump whined a lot when on full lock. So I changed that. Pump is now making no noise
So I took it for a test drive about 3 miles down the road, all good, no noise, checked the level, everything fine so I drove it back to the customers to pick m
Him up.
You can't make this up, as soon as I picked him up (about 2 miles away from the workshop ) it stared whining again and got worse as I drove back, so I immediately got it on the ramp, checked the wheel bearings, no play, doesn't seem to be any play in the other pulleys although I'm not ruling it out
It is definitely engine rev related as the pitch changes with a change of revs.
It doesn't do it for the first couple of minutes / mile and then whines again and gets worse ( not horrendous) but worse
Now my thoughts are
- turbo as it was whining bait from the turbo whilst standstill
- one of the other pulleys (alternator/ air con etc)
Or something input side on the gearbox as it still whined while stationary
So what could it be to save the customer and me time when he brings it back on Monday ?
Cheers guys
