Has anyone got any top tips in getting the drop arm off the pas box (on a 1990 td) - tried a halfrauds leggy puller (which i think was made of rice crackers) and it turned it to a twisted heap of metal - and am now in danger of irreversibly damaging PAS!

Trying to get the ball joint outta the housing knackered the arm, this attempt at sorting out a bit of play in the steering is proving a can o worms! Gonna work my way up to a complete engine replacement if i continue like this...

Cheers
OD

No, the ball joint bit was - the problem has escalated to getting the whole thing off - the ball joint popped off with Trewy's suggested ball joint popper, just wondered if i was missing something with the removal of the whole arm.

Lots of comments that it's a tricky joint but none on how to remove. Thought i'd do a quick check before i take it down the road where the chap with a puller made of something other than cream cheese will have it off in about 5 seconds (so to speak...) but will take my dosh for the priveledge.

you need a set of good pullers prefarably hydraulic the heat it up red hot and give it one allmighty hit with a club hammer that how we done it its how harwoods of land rover do it to

Thanks, matey down the road said the halfords puller fell apart at about 3 tons pull and it needed about 7 to get it off, it was stuck fast - luckily he had one which did it, unfortunately he charged me £20 for the priveledge! Steering all pukka now, it's like driving a new car! It even almost goes in a straight line... I hadn't realised the splined pin the drop arm goes on to out of the steering box was tapered, that's why it was such a bu99er to get off! Ta fer yr help. OD

I wellied the poo out of it to the point where it started top leak steering fluid, then thought £20 for man down the road to use the right tool or £100 for a new box, the cop-out won i'm ashamed to say! It was on like a bugger though.
