Hi All, so i have the SRS Fault showing on the dash display, also the red SRS light is perm ON.
i've dont a quick search and read.. so couple questions..

I'm on a 99 DSE, so no seat airbags.. which connectors and where shall i check first ? i see a thread mentioning a steering column connector, where is the passenger side one to check ?

also is this a HARD fault that can only be cleared with a friend and a Nanocom etc ?
or might it go away if i find a loose connection ?

luckily it just passed it's MOT, so guess i have a year to fix this...

ANYONE with the test / fault clear gear near Wakefield / huddersfield ?

as ever, thanks for the time and invaluable info..

I think that a 99my has got airbags, mine certainly has . Look for a label on the vertical seam of the seat back by where the door latch is . there is a connector under the seat with yellow conduit covering the cable, try wriggling the connector with the ignition OFF ,it could be that simple.

If one of the two bulbs in the dash fails the other stays on. Low battery can also trigger a fault.
Be very careful what you do, a face full of airbag is not pleasant.
Rotary coupler behind the steering wheel is favourite, the under dash connectors rarely give trouble if they have not been disturbed.
Diagnostics would tell you where the fault is.

Hey Datatek, i'm confused by the bulb thing ? the red SRS light is on along and the display shows Airbag fault.. where or what would the other bulb be ?
Battery is good.. and is now topped up by my new Solar Charger based on your post..
so could be rotary coupler then ?
guess that just involves taking the steering cowering off and taking a look ?

Not sure if a failed bulb also gives the dash message, but there a 2 bulbs for the SRS for security, if one fails the other remains lit. The ECU knows when a bulb fails.
Disconnect the battery and wait at least 10 minutes before you do anything with the SRS.

Rotary coupler is under steering wheel. It means steering wheel off. Make sure steering is positioned dead ahead if you remove steering wheel. See RAVE for details get rotary coupling in wrong place and you could snap the ribbon on lock. MY1999 has seat airbags made 1998 registered 1999 will not have. Bulb favourite.

sounds like a bulb check is 1st then.. before the more complex stuff....
haven't tried to take the binnacle out yet..
are the bulbs easy to access ?
will i still require a fault read / reset do you know ?

ta

OK.. so sad to report the bulbs in the dash check out fine ! and yep.. back together and still have the reported fault ( i even switched the bulbs around just to make sure )..
next stop ?
still hoping to find someone close by can offer a Fault read...

cheers

Diagnostics is really the only way forward or you are ****ing in the wind.

I came across this on fbook. Hopefully it works. I wish I had ifwhen I neede it!!
It came from a south American post so maybe it wont work in this region.

Contrary to popular belief, I've just found out that you CAN reset the
dashboard SRS light yourself - no Rover dealer required !

All you need is a paper-clip.

Directly under the steering wheel, just under the bottom of the dash board,
above the pedals, you can see a wide grey connector. A few inches towards
the drivers door from this, is a horizontal 2-pin yellow connector - with
nothing connected to it. Bend your paper-clip into a U shape, and stick the
ends into the 2-pin yellow connector, so shorting the pins.
Turn on the ignition, and the SRS light will illuminate for a few seconds,
and then go out.
Now pull out your paperclip (but not right out), so breaking the link.
After a couple more seconds, the SRS light will illuminate again.
Now stick the paper clip back in, making the link again, and after a couple
of seconds, the SRS light will blink twice.
Remove the paper-clip, and then switch off the ignition.

You have to do this all fairly quickly - you only get a few seconds between
each step. Because you can't see the yellow connector and the SRS light at
the same time, it's really a two-person job.

That resets the SRS system - next time you start the car, the lamp will be
off - obviously this only applies if you have no fault ! If there is a
fault, the light will illuminate again. I know I had no fault, because the
light illuminated (and then stayed illuminated) when my alternator died.

It is tricky but it is 100% correct (stolen from Rover by an enthusiast)

As stated, anything with a yellow wrapper or loom is airbag systems. Be very careful get a copy of RAVE, there is a link to the manual download somewhere and it was free. Usually it's about 15-30 mins to allow the capacitors to discharge BEFORE you touch anything.personally, I would do it with the battery disconnected and wait the safety time in RAVE. Before you take the dash out. Depends on the system, but most manuals of any credit will show the right way to check the system and not that "refer the dealer cop out some use" Dealers aren't interested in older vehicles as they want to leave things off the schedule knowing it will not matter within the contracts time. I know I have worked for some.

Playing with the SRS wires is not recommended. I have had my dash out and cannot recall the connector mentioned. I cannot see why the SRS would have a redundant connector and thus an incomplete circuit. Communication with the SRS ECU is done through the OBDII socket.

How would you do a reset with the battery disconnected?

I had the same fault about 2 years ago and some helpfull person on here said about the yellow connector that goes to becm may be the problem I switched the ignition off wiggled the connector in an out a bit an the fault cleared with a nanocom
