Hi Chaps, pretty sure this is a dry / worn CV joint or halfshaft which is about to snap, but would appreciate it if you could have a look before I buy all the bits for a strip down.

The squeal is rotational in nature as it speeds up and slows down. Only when the vehicle is moving (so not an engine belt squeal) It can't be the brakes, as tapping them makes no difference. Also, the squeal fades to almost nothing if coasting along in 5th or freewheeling downhill, but really starts up when the axle is under load (i.e. accelerating or going uphill). Oil residue on the wheel coming from the centre hub dustcap.

Slight vibration in the steering wheel now as well.

Many thanks - any advice always appreciated!

If its weeping chances are you have oil/grease in the swivels. well some, check them anyway, I would be checking props first.

I've had a few things that made squeaky noises. One was hard to solve as it was coming from the front and didn't seem to correspond to anything I could see from looking at things, wobbling things and rotating them by hand. It carried on whether or not I pressed the brake pedal. On taking it to pieces to change the brake discs and steering swivels one day I discovered the problem. The bolts holding the brake disc to the hub were loose and allowing movement. This was despite them being plastered in Loc-tite and done up as tight as I could when the thing was assembled seven years previously. Another time I had something similar it quietened down when I presssed the brake pedal. This turned out to be one of the brake pads where the friction material was separating from the metal backing. New brake pads quietened it down. Another thing that gives an intermittent squeak that gets louder under load or acceleration is the handbrake. I've had this and discovered that the problem was the friction material separating from the shoes and dragging on the drum.

That's a few possibilities based on normal wear and tear on my Land Rover. Of course, it might be a CV joint or halfshaft, but these things can create the noise too.

When my propshaft joints are getting loose I get a vibration at about 50mph. This is so reliable that I can use it as a diagnostic sign. Sure enough, when I feel all the universal joints, I can generally find one with a tiny bit of movement. So something else you might want to have a look at if you haven't already.
