Hi I hope someone can give me some advice (tried a search). The clutch on my 200tdi defender was replaced last week by a local garage (Land Rover specialist) they renewed complete clutch assembly including fork, release bearing, slave and master cylinder. since I got defender back I have trouble getting into gear mostly going from 4th to 5th sometimes 1st to 2nd also happens when coming down the gears. When it happens it's like the gearstick has hit a brick wall and no matter how hard I try it won't engage and have no option but to put back into previous gear I.e 4th. Other times when driving everything is fine and can select all gears and everything feels fine and as you'd expect with a new clutch fitted. I would take Land Rover back to garage but currently on holiday in north of Scotland besides it took the 2.1/2 weeks to do clutch as they were busy.

have you had the selector gates set up? mines was tempermental with 2nd till i got the gates sorted out.

where in the north of scotland are you ?

Selector gates? Would they have touched them whilst doing the clutch? How would I adjust them?

I'm not that far north at moment currently in Dunkeld. Going be heading up to Inverness over next day or two but would like to try and get gear selection sorted before going further.

Thanks

surely if it was clutch or bleed related it would be in every gear

what gear box is it ? assuming LT77 as its a 200tdi. in which case the gates go out of adjustment on top of the box in reverse/1/2 and 4/5

I’ve just fitted a rebuilt gearbox to my defender, the third and fourth shifts are not very good. Why?

Most rebuilt gearboxes, including ours, come without the “turret”. This the part that the gearstick bolts to. If you pull back the rubber boot on the turret you will reveal two large springs and two adjuster screws and locknuts. The role of these springs and screws is to set the rest position of the gearstick when you let go of it and is referred to as the 3/4 bias setting. When you fit a new gearbox this can sometimes need adjusting to agree with the selector shafts to ensure a clean gearshift. Firstly you need to work out which way to adjust it, to do this drive the vehicle but when shifting into 3 and 4 in stead of letting the gearstick go where it wants to go try holding it a little to the left then a little to the right, one way or the other it will drop in nicer. When you have worked this out you can adjust the screws the springs are resting on to lean the stick left or right until it shifts better.

Thanks TopDrive I'm going for a drive shortly and will try this out then if needed I'll adjust and see how it goes.
It does seem to be intermittent I'll let you know how I get on.

As for bleeding I hope it's not as I have no one to operate pedal. Lol

bob back to perth and get an eazibleed from halfords if you do feel you need to bleed it.....they do defender clutches easy 1 man.

how ever ill be surprised.

that quote was lifted from ashcrofts btw - look on youtube for more detail.

Just back from a drive about. The main issue was going from 4th to 5th I couldn't get into 5th had to drop back to 4th drove on a little bit and tried again and no problem going into 5th. Going up a hill tried going from 4th to 3rd nope wouldn't have it and was hard to get back into 4th but managed it and crawled up hill. I did as Topdrive suggested and when changing from 3rd to 4th seems easier with gearstick to the right. So does this mean I adjust left screw to push gearstick to the right? Also when moving gearstick engine off 3rd 4th seem to be aligned.

Sounds me rather like you're getting a bit of drive transmitted through the clutch even when the pedal is depressed. My experience with Land Rover gearboxes is that they're very reluctant to go into gear unless the clutch is right down (and the plates are fully separated). This is good most of the time as it makes it difficult to grind the gears. It may be that on the occasions when it goes in the engine speed and road speed are matched so that the teeth will engage whereas at other times they're not. So I'd be looking at adjusting or bleeding the clutch. If it were the springs and detents in the gearbox turret you'd be seeing the problem more consistently I'd have thought.

I've been out and had a look the pegs on the gearstick ball had a lot of play before touching the legs of the springs adjust screws were screwed quite far out. I've since adjusted them in this bringing the springs down to meet the gearstick pegs making sure 3rd and 4th selects ok and gearstick is rested at 3rd and 4th. Been for a drive and had no issues. So hopefully (touch wood) the problem is now sorted. If not I will try bleeding once I get an ezibleed.

Thanks Topdrive and everyone else for their suggestions and help I'll let you know how I get on.

I had my daughter operating the pedal for me recently when I tried to bleed the clutch and I got nowhere with it at all. I don't know if she was misunderstanding the instructions or if it was just a pig, but she has helped me do the brakes before without issues.

I got an eazibleed from toolstation and it worked great but I had to adapt an old clutch lid and connect it to the eazibleed as I could not get a perfect seal with any that were included, even though one appeared to be identical, it would seem to be sealed for a short while then start ****ing fluid out of the back.
