Snorkel fitting

I am about to fit a Mantec snorkel to my 1989 90 fitted with 300tdi and r380 box (well, snorkel has already been fitted, it's just not plumbed up yet). I have a few questions:
The air filter is the proper 300tdi defender type (i.e. bolted to the cylinder head). Snorkel too is fitted on the offside as would be the case with 300tdi defenders even though the vehicle is an earlier type.

1. Do I retain the dump valve on the front part of the snorkel? If so, is it a replaceable part? Mine is torn.

2. The y-piece that goes underneath the steering column seems to have some sort of drain at the bottom of it with some sort of sponge inside. Do I block it off? If so, how? Do I retain the y-piece at all? If not, how shall I route the pipework?

My 200 had the same dump valves, I superglued them shut and then filled with silicone.

Tbh its not essential unless you plan to do and deep water/mud/snot work, ie if its just for looks dont worry.

1) Do you mean the ducks bill on the front of the air filter housing? if so, do as Lynal says and glue it shut , fill it with silicone.

2) Mine does not have a valve at the lowest point below the steering column, but I have seen them fitted on others. Normally some sort of one way valve.

I would recommend a couple of things.

1st, Once all piped up , take the top cover off of the snorkel, start the engine and then cover the inlet on top, with something substantial, not your hand or a rag but a plank of wood, I used a hardback haynes manual once and it tried to tear the front cover apart, so it has some real suction on it. See if it stalls the engine , if it does not stall the engine then your snorkel is not airtight.

2nd, I also run electrical tape around the air filter housing, where the joint is, to stop any water getting in at that joint.

For the air filter joint use a large o-ring and stretch the hell out of it, excellent seal.
