Hi guys i bought a 1996 disco and so far i love it! a seals gone on a hub or something so its leaked all over the wheel but its in on Tuesday to get that sorted! what im asking about is that every time i start the engine up a blast of black smoke comes out! and its each time! i can turn the engine off and start it up a min later and again a black smoke! it doesn't smoke when driving by all accounts! any help as to what it is! i gave it a good blast on the motorway to give it a clear out but still on start blast of black smoke? oh yeah cant be overr fueling has only got about a 1/4 tank filled!!

HEEELLLLLPPPPPP

It's perfectly normal. When the engine starts the starter turns the engine at about 150-200 rpm or so, way below normal idle speed (at least 5-600 rpm when cold). So until the engine reaches 5-600 rpm the governor pumps up more fuel than actually needed in order to accelerate the engine. At those low revs the fuel isn't sprayed as well as at normal idle speeds so it doesn't burn as well. Neither the injection timing is right so you can't expect much.
All these things belong to a transition stage from a full stop to a normal idle when the things aren't working so well.
By the way, no need to touch the accelerator pedal while starting the engine, it doesn't need to and you'll increase the size of the black cloud.

So take it easy, get acquainted with your new toy and have fun.

so you just have to live with it then? didnt think that would be the case! but thanks for the answer to my post! lookinng forwad to geting her going proper!

A new battery works wonders, turns quicker, starts quicker, less unburt diesel to smoke.

Oh and dont go down the glow plug road.A good tdi should start first flick with out glow plugs, only need them after about -5

I disageee Jason!
The purpose of the glowplugs includes a faster cleaner start to reduce the free "carbon black" that is produced, some of which ends up in the oil, and the rest down the exhaust. Filthy dirty unhealthy stuff ...

Good glowplugs is a very good idea.

Diesel engines differ in starting techniques.

Some say NO THROTTLE (such as TD5) but others say full throttle.

It's worth finding out which way suits your car's injection pump / system.

The injection timing is radically altered at starter-motor speeds. Basically, when the engine is stopped, and when it is turning on the starter, the governor assumes you are trying to light her up and does two things .... it shoves in HEAPS of fuel, and it alters the timing quite a lot.

As soon as the engine lights up, the governors shut down the fuel delivery to just enough to keep it ticking over, and it instantly backs off the timing too.

In an engine like this, putting your foot on the throttle disables the automatic cold starting setup, and that may make it hard to start, especially on a cold day, and if you have your foot well down may produce a lot of dirty sooty smoke.
