hi i've just purchased an 02 freelander 2.0td esx 5 door and just noticed when i turned off the jeep and got out i heard like a fan motor noise running for a short time then it went off also there was smoke coming out of a pipe behind the front bumper on the left hand side or passenger side, i had only travelled about 5 minutes from start to switch off. can any one tell me what this is all about and is there something serious wrong and if so what to check and how to repair and cost. has anyone else on this site had this problem if this is a problem or am i worrying about nothing. have a few other niggly things i need to ask but will leave them another for thread.

As has been said it is the fuel burning heater which only operates in cold temperatures. It is there because the TD4 is very efficient heat wise and without the FBH would take ages to warm up the heater. You haven't got aproblem. Don't worry.
