first of all i just want to say hello to all as i am new to the site, :)...i have just bought a freelander td4 05...but i am starting to think i have made a mistake, had it a month and had tc/ abs light fault and window reg gone..both faults fixed now.. but now have new problem...the engine was very sluggish and i felt as if it was going to stall at lights etc....thought it was me at first but after a month i thought this can not be right...i read some of the threads here and went for a new maf...i ran it for a day unplugged and the car ran better so i thought it was worth a try with a new maf...any way when fitted the car was totally different...it is so sluggish and under powered until it hit around 2000 rpm and then the turbo cuts in then the power is fine...i have been told that the ecu will have to re learn its setting because i unplugged the old maf (is that right? and how long does that take?) also my other problems is i feel the car is hopeless until 2000 rpm ...is it normal for a td4 to be really sluggish until the turbo comes in....i have to wait for half mile gap in traffic before i feel safe to pull out...this is my first 4x4 but surely this can not be right...if anyone could help me out i would be really grateful....thanks...
ps the filter that i have now checked yet is the crank breather filter....could this make the car sluggish at low revs?

where bouts in the country are you ? :D, and yes, a big mistake ! to save checking the breather just take it back from where it came, have you got it wet yet ?

hi truck
i am from ellesmere port, wirral, i can not take it back as out of warrenty know the fixed the tc/abs and window faults....but would not do anything about the engine...there is a big improvement in it since i fitted the maf sensor but i just feel the car is not running right at low revs....heart stopping every time i want to pull away..i was told that the ecu has to re learn its setting for the maf ? i dont know if thats bull or not?.. the car seems great above 2000rpm its just the low end power feels crap...i dont tow anything but if i did i dont think this td4 would pull away...i am sure its something simple maybe another sensor somewhere..dont want to go to the stealers unless i have to...any help would be welcomed..thanks

It can be much faster than that scouse mate. Check out Synergy modules from Roverron ;)

Also clean out the EGR valve......... even better fit a bypass.

Take a pinch of stuff from other types of LR owners, they get jealous of the fact ours dont rust like theirs :D

Hi and welcome,

This sort of sluggishness crops up fairly often and there's plenty of info on the forums.

Download 'Rave' via Greenoval site for reference.

Clean out or by pass EGR and block off small vac pipework.

If there is no excessive smoke during acceleration then I would suspect delayed turbo boost and check:

Boost pressure sensor (becomes clogged with oily mess due to EGR operation)

Turbo boost solenoid (operates the turbo vanes)

Turbo wastegate linkage ( may be siezed)

Dag..

P.s. The engine breather is very important and must be clean.

Hellllllp:doh:

2002 - 2004 TD4 Freelander 3Door before the new 2004.

So far I have replaced:mad:
1) 2 injectors
2) 2 fuel pumps and filter
3) swapped out the MAF
4) Done the injector bypass test
5) Blanked off the EGR
6) Replaced propshaft with VCU 3 times
7) Replaced diff three times the second one disintegrated at 120KPH left me stranded 200kms from home on a Friday night.
8) Put new tyres on it
9) Disconnected the MAF and reconnected it.

My problem has evolved!
1) Initially the 70MPH would not rev over 4K (Injectors, pumps, MAF)
2) Then the smoke and hard start (EGR)
3) Then the shudder on pull away (disconnected the MAF) and reconnected it.
4) After a day the car suddenly felt almost right! I had power from 1.5 RPM instead of 2.5. Yahooooo. But noticed that the engine still takes too long to rev up when flooring it in neutral.
5) F%&^#$&#@*$&$*^$&%&^KKKK last night in the traffic under idle it suddenly started to misfire!.......
6)Now I have an eratic idle between0.95 and 0.97 and it cuts out under idle sometimes. This is usually when hot.

All of the above between August this year, when I made the awfull mistake of selling my discoV8 that I could not aford to drive as its fuel eco was up too and it had some serious amigo problems for this heap of s^&t, and now!

PLEASE help I am at my wits end.

Let me try and describe my current symptoms clearly
1) Slow to rev up
2) Shudder on pull away especially uphill but not as bad as it was before I disconnected the MAF and reconnected it and it mysteriously felt better the next day.
3) Fuel consumption is not up to scratch 12Kms per litre
4) I smell unburnt diesel in the cab every so often?
5) I suspect the power is not what it should be.
6) Now the erratic idle sometimes causing the car to cut out in the traffic when moving along at idle speed.

Is there a bof out there that can help.

thanks for all your quick input ppl, i am going to change the crank case filter and clean out the EGR sometime over the next week so i will keep you posted of the results, if i could just improve the first 2000rpm revs i will be happy, i will say that the 90 quid i spent on a new maf sensor was worth it .. can anyone tell if after unplugging the maf sensor and fitting a new one... IS IT TRUE that the ECU has to re-learn driving habits over time? if so does anyone know how many miles approx before the ecu is back in tune.....thanks

Are you saying that with the Maf unplugged the car runs normal but now you have replaced the Maf it has less performance than when it was unplugged??

hi
the car was stalling on me and was very under powered so after reading posts here i tried the route of unplugging the maf sensor.....when i did the car was i whole lot better...so i left it unplugged until i got a new maf sensor a few days ago....i have now fitted the new maf sensor and the car is a lot better BUT....its still very under powered and weak at pulling away at low revs...until i hit 2000rpm...once the turbo cuts in at 2000rpm the car feels fine....I WAS TOLD that because i had unplugged the old maf sensor i had reset the ecu to default settings? ...and because i have now fitted a new MAF SENSOR , the ecu needs time to re program its self as it is a self learning ecu..? I DONT KNOW IF THATS TRUE... if the ecu is self learning does anyone know how long, or how many miles i would have to clock up before the ecu is back in tune?...i have done around 100 mile with the new maf sensor but the car is still very sluggish at low rpm..thanks for any help

Still trying to clarify, is it worse with the new maf connected than with it disconnected??

I,m pretty sure the ecu self learning doesn't apply to maf sensors.

When i first got my 2004 sport it was fine but over a period of a few months became slugish. I unplugged the map and it ran perfect. I replaced the maf with a brand new unit, reconnected the maf and all was good for a few weeks until it started to happen again:confused2:. SO, i unplugged the maf again and ran fine. I read on here that the standard Bosch sensor is not reliable and usually dies around 40k mark. The sensor i replaced it with was new but aftermarket and basically a load of sh1te. I fitted the standard one back on and purchased a Synergy module from Roverron. This module has a maf sensor conpensator built into it and also gives you several settings to run higher bhp and torque. Cost around £180 delivered and when fitted it was like a different car!! Im not running a sales pitch here but these modules really do work. The other added bonus of this unit is that you can then fit a pierburg (however you spell it lol) sensor which is far better than the bosch sensor which i will be fitting soon.

There's been a lot of duff cheap sensors being sold because the proper bosch one is so expensive. Bit of a no brainer really, proper factory bosch sensor:- too expensive, poor reliability. Cheapo aftermarket sensor:- waste of money. Best option is pierburg sensor & roverron mafam compensator or synergy 2 with built in compensator.

hi all
sorry for delay in re-posting on this matter.... as i said at the start of my post my main question was is the ECU self learning?.. i had the new MAF sensor fitted ( LUCAS) by a land rover specailist... the car was a lot better but it felt really sluggish and had a flat spot below 2000rpm... as this is my first ever 4x4 i was not sure how the car should accelarate, the mech who fitted the new MAF told that the more i drove the car the better it would get....the reason for this was ! because i had unplugged the MAF senor i had put the ecu to default settings !!...he told me that over time the ECU would re learn the setting for the new MAF sensor...I had no reason to doubt him.. finally after driving for over 1000 mile i can feel a differance in the car...the sluggish flat spot at below 2000rpm seems a hole lot better...!!! nothing else has been done to the car since the new MAF SENSOR .....so i guess the mech was right when he said the ECU needed time to adjust to the new MAF sensor....i am still going to blank off the egr valve as soon as time allows....thanks for all your help...glad i found this great site:D:D:D:D:mil88:
