Hi All,
My brother has a four door '85 Classic that he loves, which has prompted me to buy an '83 two door Classic with a Schuler transfer case and 727 Chrysler Torqueflite auto.

I'm a big chap (6'3" and 100kg) and figured that the two door would allow more room for entry and exit, and that the seat with integral belt would mean that the seat would go back further to allow more leg room. (The position of the door pillar on the four door would appear to control how far the seat can go back and still allow the correct angle of the belt over the shoulder).

WRONG!

Not only am I short of leg room, but my head brushes the roof in the 2 door!
My brother's car is 1000 miles away in Sydney, so it makes it difficult to take comparative measurements.
BTW his car has a sunroof whereas mine doesn't, and yet his seemed to have plenty of headroom despite the couple of inches lost due to the sunroof.

To compound the problem, my son (6'4") is doubled up in the back with very little leg room.

I am sure that both the 2 door and 4 door share the same wheelbase (except the LSE), so what is going on here!?

All that I can think of is that the back seat is positioned further forward in the 2 door. Is this the case?

From what I can see, aftermarket seats with integral seat belts are few and far between, but this would seem to be the obvious solution (apart from selling, it and buying an LSE, which I'm not really keen to do.)

Surely someone must have solved this problem before, I can't be the only full-sized Anglo-Saxon wanting to drive a Rangie!

Any useful suggestions (Apart from the obvious such as amputation!) will be MOST welcome!

Thanks,
Chris

The rear seat was moved back for the 4 door, if you measure your load bed and ring him you'll see yours is a good bit longer.
Looking at the parts book there seems to be different seat plinth and seats from VIN no EA351032. I think that came in in 1986. you might be able to swap seats for a later one if it gives more head room.

Thanks SpudH,
That makes sense.
Which leads to the obvious question:
Is it possible to retrofit a 4 door back seat to a 2 door, and has anyone fitted conventional belts and say, Recaro seats to a 2 door?
I'm not sure if the door pillars would be strong enough to take the seat belts or not.
Mine is one of the last 2 doors that we got here in Horses Traylia, so I'm going to be struggling to get a secondhand seat plinth from the later car.
Thanks again for the speedy reply.
Happy Trails,
Chris
