Hi,

Im new to this site and looking for some advice. My series 3 seems to have an electrical problem with the lights. the dipped beam headlights have stopped working as well as the front right and rear left indicators. all the bulbs are fine and not blown. Electrics are not my strong point and any help would be useful.

Thanks.

I think you may have two or even three different faults there. I recently had one front left indicator fault and a rear right at the same time. The front was a bad earth and the rear was the bulb holder not making proper contact. The dipped lights could be anything from the lamp back to the switch. You need to get the dash out and check the electrical feeds.

Hi,
thanks for the advice! since my last post the indicators started working again but the rear left has stopped working again. and still no luck with the dipped beam headlights. i will have a look behind the dash and see if there is anything obvious.

Cheers

Sounds like an upgrade to your lights is in order ... this is a good thing ...

It means you learn where bits are and how to fix 'em ... AND ... the car has something less to set fire to it's self with ... :D

Oh yeah ... check all earths near the lights themselves, also check the bulbholders they're getting on a bit now ...
And then check the switch ... they can get warm and stop making contact or get very warm and not turn off ...

Before ripping the dash apart go to the front plastic grill. Take it off. In behind in front of the radiator are the lighting connections. Check them all for loose connections or corroded links. The intermittent faults are indicative of a connection problem around there. Oh and welcome. Take problems to the series section of the forum.

Hi, so i have just spent a while looking around and i have taken the dash off and everything appears to be fine. I also took the front grill off and cleaned up where the wires connect to the metal plate above (which i think is where its earthed!?) but this made no difference. I will have a better look at the connectors in the front tomorrow, although they didn't appear damaged. Thanks for the advice :)
