Series 3 Transit Engine Orientation

Hello All,

I've recently bought a series 3 with a 2.5TDi Transit engine. Very pleased with the conversion, suits the series well (with RR diffs and larger wheels).

I am about to service it and have a question about the oil level. In the series, the engine appears to be tilted in order to mate it to the gearbox. To make sure I've got the correct oil level, my plan is to jack the series to get the engine to the correct level, top the oil up to fill on the dipstick, drop the landy back down and stamp the dipstick with the new full mark.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to a transit to check the engine level. Does anyone with a MK5 transit know: is the sump perfectly flat (horizontally level) in the transit application?

You're going to kick yourself! Sump drain plugs are always at the bottom - tip it until it is. Drain it and then fill with it still tipped.

Ermm, no, he doesn't. He just needs to get the drain hole to the bottom, in the same way that you do if your car isn't on level ground.

and the pitch of the engine?

he's trying to set up the dipstick so he can check the level without having to jack up or tilt his Landy everytime

being silly about this surely.......

do it by working it out correctly, drain the engine and fill with the maximum oil then tilt the engine until the stick reads max and adjust the mounts accordingly

the exact angle is all well and good but unless he has an engineers protractor or angle gauge to measure with constantly its a pain......

Tip over until the hole is at the bottom. Drain. Fill to the correct mark on the dipstick. Put it back on it's wheels on level ground. Read dipstick, make a mark. That is the 'new' and exact correct level.

Thanks for the replies chaps - the plug on the Transit engine appears to point at an angle on the corner, suggesting that in the transit application, the sump is not quite flat.

In the end, I drove it side onto a slope, got the sump level (with a spirit level!) and dropped the oil/refilled from there. New stamp on the dipstick and away to go! Quite surprised at how far it's tilted in the series though.....
