Series 3 or not?

Steer clear and avoid it at all costs, it’s most probably a 300tdi defender which has been put on series 3 reg in order to get all of the benefits such as tax and so on, also report the ad as it is misleading and whoever buys that is gonna get a big shock, it’s not on leaf springs and has pretty much defender everything on it. It could also possibly be a bitsa, if so, then also avoid it as that is not a series 3. Hope you find this useful!

Welcome to the forum.

Iirc prior to 97 this was sort of legal, so if it is an old conversion (and there must be some left?) it could actually be legit, we all know its most likely not, but I am trying to provide a little glimmer of hope!
Bollox was it legal ever!!

It is just someone trying to make a tax exempt Ninety illegally. That is, if the reg shows it as a Series III, then this vehicle shares nothing with a Series III and has a different wheelbase too!

The only legal way, would be to have it registered as what it is and have an older 'private' plate on it. This would be legal.

Yep it was you could do all sort sorts before a certain date, which as I stated earlier was I think 1997.

We all know what that particular car is, I have also stated that earlier, what I was doing is playing devils advocate, and suggesting in certain circumstances it used to be legal to carry out all sorts of mods.

But thanks for repeating what I have already posted.

Seriously no. It has never been legal. Can you provide any proof of legislation allowing it? People did get away with more in years past, but way way before 1997. But they weren't legal then or now. And in the case of this example, it isn't a modified vehicle. It is a vehicle using a different identity, which had been illegal since vehicle identities were introduced.
