A friend of myn recently bought one of these K&N bolt on air filters for his early series 3, 2.25 petrol, but has since sold the vehicle therfore has kindly given me it. Although I wouldnt normally waste my money on this kind of thing ,with it been free I couldnt say no. Anyway fitted this afternoon (took all of 2 minutes) and looks alot tidier with the old oil bath filter removed. Although now the breather pipe from the rocker cover now has nowhere to go, just wondering is it ok left just hanging or am I better fitting a cap with no breather like my mates older series 3??

Another thing I have now noticed the idle seems alot higher with this filter fitted,is it just a case of adjusting the throttle stop screw on the webber carb to lower the idle?

Your advice is much appreciated.

I dont know why people put an open ended filter on an off road vehicle. Doesn't seem to make sense to me. Oh well each to their own.

If you are idling high, it could be that because of the extra air flow you are now running a bit lean and hence the higher idle. Adjusting the idle will fix that no doubt, but you will still be running lean. I would suggest running it for a while like it is (not on idle) and then check the spark plugs. If they have gone a bit too white, the running lean idea will be proved correct - and then you know to match a bigger fuel jet on your carb.
