hi

now i have started to collect landrover ive got a 110 90 and a series3 all non runners (scrap). im trying to get the series on the road before the because it could be the quickest repair. its a 75 year 2 1/4 not sure if it runs are there any known problems with this engine???? what engine should i replace it with and anyone got 1 ???
cheers steve

The 2 1/4 is a pretty solid engine though the diesel is a bit sluggish on the road but capable enough especially if fitted with overdrive or Rangie diffs.

If a swaps in order then a 2/300tdi with or without the turbo every time

They take a lot to kill them by all accounts but as has been said maybe that has something to do with them not being stretched! Getting harder to find for peanuts though but a 2.5 petrol is worth a look and is an easy swap.

There's endless bits on the suggested 200/ 300tdi swap with and without turbo, also the v8 sounds good (but single figure mpg), my advice is try get what you've got going, also petrol or diesel 2.25? And I wish the best of luck :)

I can not recommend using 3.54 Rangie diffs in a 2.25 diesel. I tried it and even with a good rebuilt engine the "driveability" is lost. Only try them in a petrol or 200 tdi conversion.

Both my 200tdi conversion and 2.25P could/do benefit from some serious ratio changes but yes you're probably right. Overdrive works well with a 2.25D though

I've got. 2.25 d and I agree, originally I thought the OD wasn't enough but now after a while of driving I think that an overdrive is about the correct gearing, I admit on the flat the gearing is still low with the OD , however on any incline the OD is prehaps if anything too much, you can maintain a speed on a motorway up hill (just) but you certainly can accelerate
