Hi Guys, my father in law has a series 2 land rover. If we start it without touching the accelerator then it starts immediately. If we start it and touch the accelerator at the same time it's shorting out and just clicking. Once started it's fine. Any help greatly appreciated. SSJ

It could be the cable rubbing against the solenoid when you push the pedal.

Basically, clicking on a no start the first place to start is a weak battery or bad connection. As your battery starts otherwise it leaves connection.
If you move the pedal it does something to break a good connection so you get the click.

Open the bonnet and start the car feel the throttle cable, is it warm?

Attach a jump lead to a good point on the engine and the chassis then try pushing pedal and starting.

It’s where I would start looking anyway, others may have other ideas:).

The S2 I'm working on doesnt have a cable operated accelerator it's all rods but it's a diesel dont know if petrol is different but doubt it...

Hi and welcome.. accelerator linkage on a petrol is rods too with a shaft running along the top of the bulkhead, unless it's had some more modern engine fitted. Sounds possible as the solenoid should be a push button and doesn't click when you turn the key

I obviously stand corrected by folk who know the S2 as regards throttle cable:).
But still reckon a basic coat of looking at and jiggling could sort it easy:).
lets hope we find out otherwise I might not sleep tonight;).
