Hi All
My son has a 1979 Series 111 with a replacement 2.25 diesel (we think!) which runes sweet enough but the other day after a run of a few miles it lost power and stopped. He managed to get it going again but since then it's got worse. We could get it going again by pumping the lift pump but this resulted in journies of varying lengths. The fuel filter was full of rust that we cleaned out but couldn't replace (Bank Holiday!) and the thing started and ran well for several miles but on a second test run went back to the old problem. Since then we've flushed the fuel tank dozens of times and got rid of most rust; fitted a new lift pump & new filter and it went like a dream on the first test run of 10 miles but on the second we were back to square one. I checked the filter and that was fine but the diesel was tinged with a black like ink which I assume is engine oil. I've taken off the distribution pump but didn't strip it down much but it looked clean & okay. I am assuming it is a fuel starvation problem but I'm running out of ideas so would really appreciate a pointer in the right direction - cheers.

until you've got rid of ALL of the rust it's pointless doing anything else - and if there's that much rust coming out you'd be better off putting a new one in or you'll be forever plagued with problems

Thanks everyone - tank was indeed badly rusted and the fine gauze filter on the take up pipe on the sender inside the tank was completely blocked - how she ran at all I don't know. A new tank solved the problem.
