Hi

While in New Zealand recently I purchased a 1957 series 1, swb soft top LR. It is in very original condition and has been in a barn for the past 20 years. After a little tlc the engine fired up and we managed a short journey around the yard in her. It all appeared original to me with my limited knowledge, having owned a similar vehicle 30 years ago. However, I have since been told it has a later model series one engine, and the seller confirmed he had put a new engine in her many years ago. I had intended to bring the vehicle to the UK for restoration. Even though I do not intend to sell her, should I bring her here I would not like to think I had spent more money on the vehicle than it was worth. Can anyone advise what impact this alteration might have had on her value. Many thanks. RichJ
 
The series one only ran till 58 , and from 50 it was a 2ltr oise , so unless he fitted a 2.25 ohv engine there should be no originality problem. If he did a 2ltr should be easily found and refitted.
 
Two litre fitted from 1952, this was a Siamese bore. the speadbore arrived in 1955 (also 2 litre), then came the two litre diesel in 1957. What is the engine that is currently fitted?

thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the Land Rover is in NZ and I am in London! I have checked my the ownership papers and it does not give an engine size, but does give an engine number, 111802663. Does this help at all? My neighbour in NZ said it was a later model Series 1 engine, could this be the spreadbore you mention? Regards RichJ

You need to establish exactly what engine is in the vehicle , so that an answer could be given , as it may be correct for the time period .
 
Ok, I will do. I will get the neighbour who told me it was not the correct engine to tell me what he thinks it is and get back to you. Many thanks.
 
my guess was based on the engine number :D

it has a series 1 2l engine, that is original, having one a year earlier won't make much difference, you would also have to look very hard, saw a recon one on ebay the other month iirc it went for around 2.5k
