I am trying to time my series (petrol 2.25), workshop manual says TDC with 90 octane or 3deg with 83 octane, modern petrol is 95 octane or above anyone have an ideas of where I should set the timing?

The best bet is to time it by ear. Those figure are relevant for a new engine not a worn one.

As above, I would wind the slow running screw up some so engine would hold steady revs above normal tickover and move distributor to a point the engine revs were highest/smoothest, all by ear.

As I understand it, 'modern' unleaded petrol burns slower than the old lead stuff, so to get the most bang for your buck timing should be 6 degrees before TDC, however as it has been stated above that's for a new engine without any wear. Use 6BTDC as a starting point then fine tune by ear to get the best from your engine. Mark your dizzy before you move anything so you can reset back at the start if you muck it up.

Thanks all for your time, looks like static time it at 6BTDC then playit by ear. All the best DW.
