Hi, I want to mount some speakers in my defender roof lining (either side above the front doors). Do I need brackets for this or do they simpley screw in to it??

Cheers

Ollie

I did this last year. I bought ordinary car speakers and they fitted just fine. The lining isn't as stiff as door card and isn't supported in the middle, so don't go for anything too heavy.

If you are a stereo purist, you will find that you will have one speaker close to our head which will be much louder than the other. However, if you are running the existing speakers as well, it is easy to get a reasonable balance across all four.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, I was thinkng about running side speakers as well as two in the lower dash. I could then use the left chanel for the roof speakers and the right chanel of the stereo for the dash speakers so I can sort the balace out for now.

Although I would like to use a potentiometer for each roof speaker to adjust there volumes whilst retaining correct stereo left/right channels, but i'll probably get round to that at a later date.

Cheers

cant use just use fade (front/back) along with balane to get the right sound balance, that way you dont need to wire it up funny?

Ive got a shelf up near the alpine windows in my 90 van with 2 6x9s pointing down behind the seats. its a pretty good position to be honest. i run these with the other speakers in the original position up front.

Thats a good idea about the shelf, I was going to make up some mdf boxes for my rear speakers but I might go for that one instead, as im less convinced about the roof mounting.

Im afraid Ive got what must be a 20 year old pioneer radio cassette player in my 90, and dont have fade :( hence the need for dogey wiring ;) I originally used it to test my wiring but it does sound good and lookes pretty retro to boot!

Ive been trawling the local breakers today and managed to get some 7" sony speakers 5" kenwoods, a radio enclosure, speaker spacers (for under dash) and a LR grille badge for £10!! So Ive got a good day tomorow sorting it all out, figuring out what is going to go where.
Cheers

yer, it works well in a 90. its 10mm ply i think, covered in carpet pushed up against the dog guard. bolted to the roof/sides with some 90 degree angle. I use it to put light stuff on when we are camping. shoes, jackets, fleeces, bags etc. keeps them up out of the wet etc. and it houses my speakers. boxes worked well in my old 90, but they eat up some of your load space. didnt think much of it at the time, but up on the shelf out of the way is much better.
