The reversing lights on my 1998 1.8xei petrol freelander are not working.

I have checked the bulbs and they are fine and I have been told that is probably a dodgy switch on the gear stick.

I have looked under the plastic around the gear stick and the only switch there is the hill descent one, so I wondered if anyone could tell me where this switch is located and possible replacement part numbers.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

The reverse light switch is on the gearbox, bot the gearstick. It tells the the reverse lamps to illuninate when reverse is selected in the gearbox. I think it is also one of the switches that activates the HDC, which only works in 1st and reverse.

On yours, the PG1 gearbox, it is one of these two... Not sure which one, but a bit of tinkering will determine which.

Thanks for that, very useful.

I have been quoted around £40 for the part (CDU51L) by my local dealer.

Searching the net a little, there are several places that I can get it delivered for around a £10 (although probably not genuine part). So I wondered if anyone had has any dealings with any of the following and would recommend/warn-off dealing with them.

Land Rover parts, spares, Land Rover accessories, all models

Thanks once again for any help you can give me.

Just had a look through the Freelander Technical Brochure and I was right about the first gear and reverse light switches activating the HDC - via the ABS control unit.

Here's another picture which differentiates between the two switches...

Thanks again, I have printed that out and will be having a tinker at the weekend.

I would have to order the part, which ever route I choose to go as the dealer doesnt keep it on their shelves, I won't be ordering or spending any money if I don't have to, just wanted to save a bit of time and ask for advice on those internet retailers just incase the switch is knackered (which I hope it is, or else I am stuck for answers).

Thanks again, this site is great.
